A young kid learning to ride behind the boat in Miami

Yes — kids can absolutely wakesurf, and honestly, the younger they start, the faster they pick it up. We teach all ages on Biscayne Bay, and some of our best first-session riders are kids.

If you're a parent wondering whether wakesurfing for kids is safe or realistic, here's everything you'd want to know before booking a family day on the water.

Why kids learn faster than adults

Kids have a few built-in advantages. They're not afraid. Adults overthink the fall; kids just go. They're light and low to the board, so balance comes naturally. And they're sponges — give a seven-year-old two tries and they'll often out-ride a parent who's been "almost getting it" all afternoon. Low speed, soft water, big stable wake: it all plays to a kid's strengths.

Is it safe for children?

It's one of the gentler watersports out there, and we run it conservatively. Every rider wears a properly fitted life jacket. The boat moves at a walking-pace 10–12 mph, the wake is soft and rolling rather than hard, and your driver has full control of speed the entire time. There's always an instructor focused on the rider, and we never push a kid past what they're comfortable with. If they want to ride tandem with a parent first, that works too.

What age can a kid start wakesurfing?

As a rough guide, most children can start around 6–7 years old once they're comfortable in the water and can follow simple instructions. Younger kids can still be part of the day — riding along, tubing, or surfing tandem with an instructor or parent. There's no hard rule; it's about water-confidence more than a birthday. Tell us your child's age and we'll set the session up to match.

How we run it for families

Our open group sessions are 18+, so for kids we recommend a private lesson or a private charter — your own boat, your own driver & coach, and a pace set entirely around your family. Parents ride, kids ride, everyone swims and cruises the skyline in between. It tends to become the day the whole family talks about for the rest of the trip.

Start them early

A kid who learns to wakesurf at seven has a sport for life — and a much easier path to wakeboarding and surfing later. The water confidence, the balance, the stoke: it all compounds. The sooner they start, the better.
